How Zuno keeps quiet

Encrypted before it leaves your device
Messages, calls and files are encrypted on your device and decrypted only by the people they are for, in every chat and room.
One server, and it does not gossip
Zuno runs on a single server that does not share messages with any other, which leaves far less to attack.
No phone number, no email address
Most chat apps ask for one, which makes it easy to link an account to a real person. Zuno needs only a username and password.
Nothing worth selling
No ads, no trackers, no analytics. Zuno is not built to profile anyone.

Encrypted at every step, not just in transit

"End-to-end encrypted" usually covers the messages and stops there. Zuno goes further.

Messages
Encrypted on your device and decrypted only on the recipients' devices. The server stores them without the key to read them.
Photos, video and files
Encrypted before they are uploaded, and photos and videos are stripped of GPS location and EXIF data first. The key never reaches the server.
Calls
Encrypted on your device, with the key shared only between the devices on the call. The relay that connects the call cannot decrypt it.
Notifications
Carry no sender and no content. Your device fetches and decrypts the message itself, so push services never see it.
What encryption cannot hide
Encryption hides what people say, not everything around it. The server still sees who talks to whom, and when. A screenshot or a compromised device is beyond Zuno's reach.

Owners, moderators and control over who can do what.

Built on

Zuno uses Matrix, an open protocol whose encryption has been reviewed by outside cryptographers, not something invented in-house. The server runs on hardware Zuno controls.
